As an international student in Korea, I was curious about part-time jobs that would allow me to engage with local culture and improve my skills.
Working at an English Kids Café seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Here’s what I learned from my experience and research about this unique job:
Regulations for International Students
Visa Restrictions:
D-2 or D-10 visa holders face limitations when working in foreign language education settings, including English Kids Cafés. However, there are exceptions for roles like play facilitators or safety assistants.
You should always check with your university’s international office and must issue a "Part-Time Work Confirmation Form."
Day-to-Day at an English Kids Café
Work Environment:
English Kids Cafés are lively spaces where children learn English through play and activities. As part of the team, I worked with both Korean and native English-speaking staff, and the environment was colorful, interactive, and fast-paced.
What I Did:
Facilitated activities like cooking, storytelling, and crafts to teach English naturally.
Assisted with managing children during programs, ensuring they were safe and engaged.
Occasionally communicated with parents about their child’s progress and learning experience.
What I Loved:
Watching children learn and have fun in an immersive environment was incredibly rewarding.
The creative aspect of the job kept things interesting—no two days were the same!
I improved my communication and multitasking skills, which I know will benefit me in future roles.
What Was Hard:
It’s a physically demanding job. Being on my feet and keeping up with energetic kids was exhausting at times.
Balancing multiple activities while ensuring the children stayed focused took a lot of patience and creativity.
My Advice
If you’re interested in working at an English Kids Café, make sure you fully understand the visa regulations and prepare all the required documents before applying. It’s also worth considering if you have the energy and passion for working in a high-energy, child-centered environment.
Overall, it’s a great experience for anyone who loves kids, enjoys creative work, and wants to be part of Korea’s unique education culture. If you’ve had a similar experience or have questions, feel free to share below! Let’s help each other navigate these opportunities!
