2025.04.24 22:08If you're working as a freelancer or doing part-time jobs in South Korea—especially under a D-10 or F-series visa—you may be responsible for self-reporting your taxes each year in May. Here's what you need to know:
🧾 Who Needs to Report?
If you're not employed by a company that handles your taxes for you (such as salaried workers), you’re considered self-employed or an independent contractor. This applies to:
- Freelancers (writers, designers, tutors, translators, etc.)
- Private English teachers not under a school contract
- Part-time workers who receive income directly without tax deductions
🗓️ Tax Filing Period
When? Every year, from May 1st to May 31st
What for? You file your comprehensive income tax return (종합소득세, jonghap sodeukse)
📌 How to File Taxes
Prepare Your Income Records
Keep invoices, receipts, and bank records showing how much you earned the previous year.
- Use Hometax (국세청 홈택스)
- Visit www.hometax.go.kr (Korean only, but you can get help from a tax office or service)
- Register and log in with your ARC info
- File under 종합소득세 신고
Deductions and Expenses
You can deduct business expenses (office supplies, internet bills, transportation, etc.), so keep those receipts!
Pay Your Tax
The system will calculate how much you owe. You can pay by card, bank transfer, or at a convenience store with a barcode.
🚨 Important Notes
Failing to report may lead to penalties or visa issues
Even if your income is small, it’s better to report—it builds good tax history for F-2 or F-5 visa applications
