Opening a Korean bank account is essential for foreigners, whether for receiving salaries, managing payments, or simply for daily expenses while studying or traveling. Key documents typically required include your passport, visa, Alien Registration Card (ARC), Korean address, and a Korean phone number. While an in-person visit is usually necessary to open an account, major banks now increasingly accept mobile ARCs, streamlining the process. Most larger bank branches, especially in cities like Seoul or Busan, will have English-speaking staff. In smaller cities or branches like Daegu, English proficiency might be limited, but basic communication is often possible with translation apps. Recommended Banks: KEB Hana Bank: Highly favoured by foreigners for its user-friendly Hana EZ app and excellent English support. Their app simplifies overseas remittances. Call: 02-1544-3000 x8,9 (Korea) or +82-1544-3000 x8,9 (Overseas). Woori Bank: Offers extensive ATM access and a solid online banking experience. While generally foreigner-friendly, some users find their app occasionally complex. They also have a dedicated foreigner call centre. Call: 02-1599-2288 (Korea) or +82-1599-2288 (Overseas). Both banks provide comprehensive services tailored for international residents, making financial management in Korea more accessible.
