6. Work Culture and After-Hours Socializing
Korean employees are known for their strong work ethic, long hours, and commitment to their teams. After-hours gatherings, known as “hwaesik” (회식), are a common way to build team spirit. These events often involve dinner and drinks and are seen as an extension of the workday, though participation expectations are gradually becoming more flexible, especially among younger workers.
If you don’t drink, a polite refusal is generally accepted just be sure to participate in some capacity, even briefly, to show goodwill.
My Final Thoughts
Korean work etiquette can seem complex at first, but it all centers around one core idea: "Respect" for colleagues, superiors, and the group. Taking time to understand and practice these cultural norms not only avoids misunderstandings but also builds stronger, more respectful professional relationships.
Whether you're entering a Korean office for the first time or managing a remote team with Korean colleagues, adopting these etiquettes will help you succeed and thrive in one of the most dynamic and respectful work cultures in the world.
I am glad that I was able to help you with my experience at a Korean Company.
(SUMMERY)
Korean work etiquette is deeply rooted in values like respect, hierarchy, and harmony. Professionals are expected to address superiors with proper titles, communicate politely and indirectly, and value group consensus over individual opinions. Key customs include punctuality, formal dress, and respectful business card exchanges. After-hours socializing (hwaesik) plays a role in team bonding but is becoming more flexible. Understanding these cultural norms is essential for building strong, respectful working relationships in a Korean business environment.
