2025.07.22 14:25Living in Korea as a worker and a wife has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. What started as a Korean pop culture craze, Kdrama fever, or Korean culture turned into something much bigger: a deep dive into a culture that’s both wildly modern and deeply rooted in tradition.
On the surface, life moves fast here. The public transportation is efficient to a fault, deliveries arrive almost before you hit “order,” and the cities never seem to sleep. There’s always a cafe you haven’t tried, a neighborhood you haven’t explored, or a late-night street food vendor calling your name.
But it’s the smaller, everyday moments that define the expat experience in Korea. Watching the seasons change through cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, hearing ajummas (older ladies) laugh over market stalls, and building friendships that bridge language and cultural barriers all of these make it feel like more than just a place to live.
That said, adjusting takes time. The language barrier can be tough, social hierarchies are very real, and navigating visa paperwork isn’t always straightforward. But the community of expats is strong, and locals are often patient and curious, especially if you make the effort to learn even a little Korean.
What keeps me here? It’s the balance of excitement and comfort. Korea challenges you, surprises you, and in many ways, welcomes you. It’s not always easy, but it’s never boring. And honestly, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
