2025.07.28 11:20If you're a foreigner staying in Korea for more than 90 days, you are required by law to apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC). This card serves as your official ID in Korea and is essential for tasks like opening a bank account, signing a phone contract, registering for health insurance, applying for a driver’s license, or even purchasing certain online services. Without it, many aspects of daily life in Korea can become extremely difficult to navigate.
Here’s how to apply:
1. Book an Appointment
Go to the official HiKorea website (www.hikorea.go.kr) to make an appointment with the immigration office in your area. Appointments are mandatory and should be scheduled as early as possible, especially during the start of the academic year or job placement periods when time slots fill up quickly.
You must apply within 90 days of your arrival in Korea. Failure to do so may result in a penalty fine, legal issues, or even complications with future visa extensions. When booking, make sure to double-check the location and required documents for your visa type.
2. Prepare Required Documents
Before your appointment, gather and prepare the following materials:
Valid passport
Visa confirmation, such as a D-2 (student), D-4 (language trainee), or E-2 (teaching) visa
Completed ARC application form (downloadable from the HiKorea website or available at the immigration office)
One recent passport-sized photo (3.5cm x 4.5cm, white background, no hats or glasses, taken within the last 6 months)
Proof of residence, such as a rental agreement, dormitory confirmation, or accommodation letter signed by your host
Application fee: 30,000 KRW in cash
Additional documents, depending on your visa type – such as a certificate of enrollment for students, or employment contract for E-2 visa holders
💡 If you're unsure about the exact documents required, check the HiKorea website or contact your school/employer’s international office for guidance.
3. Visit the Immigration Office
Arrive at the immigration office on your appointment date 15–30 minutes early. Bring all your documents in printed form and in good condition. Once you arrive, take a queue number and wait for your turn. An immigration officer will verify your documents, ask a few questions if needed, and process your application.
After your submission, you will receive a receipt with a confirmation number. Processing time is typically 3 to 4 weeks, but it may vary depending on the office and time of year.
4. Pick Up or Mail Delivery
You can receive your ARC in two ways:
Pick it up in person at the immigration office. Make sure to bring your receipt and passport.
Receive it by mail for an additional fee (typically around 3,000–4,000 KRW). Ensure your mailing address is correct and that someone is available to receive the card.
