Getting Your Korean Driver’s License as a Foreigner

If you’re living in Korea for a while and thinking about getting a driver’s license maybe for weekend trips, convenience, or just to avoid packed subways you’ve got a couple of options. The process can feel a bit confusing at first (surprise, Korean paperwork 😅), but it’s not that bad once you break it down. ✅ Option 1: Exchanging Your Foreign License (if you’re lucky) Some countries have a license exchange agreement with Korea meaning you don’t need to take a driving test. You just swap your home license for a Korean one. Super simple. To do that, you’ll need: • Your original license (still valid!) • A notarized Korean translation of your license • Passport + ARC (Alien Registration Card) • A certificate of entry/exit from immigration • A health check (usually done at the same office) • Some passport photos You take all this to a Driver’s License Examination Office (운전면허시험장). If you’re eligible, they’ll take your license and give you a Korean one. Some people might have to take a quick written test about local traffic rules, but not everyone. 📝 Note: They keep your foreign license while you’re in Korea but you can get it back if you leave. 🚗 Option 2: Taking the Full Korean Driving Test (if you’re starting from scratch) If your country isn’t on the exchange list or if you don’t have a license yet you’ll need to go through the full process. That includes: 1. A written test (available in English) 2. A quick health check 3. A course driving test (on a track) 4. A real road test (this one makes people nervous but it’s doable!) You can go to a driving school or practice on your own, but most people do some training especially for the course test. 🧭 Where to Go Most major cities have at least one license exam center. In Seoul, Gangnam and Dobong centers are popular. Some staff speak English, and signs are often bilingual but don’t expect full English service everywhere. 💵 Costs It’s honestly not that expensive. Application fees are around ₩10,000–₩20,000. If you’re using a driving school, that’s extra but not required. My Advice? • Bring a Korean-speaking friend if your Korean isn’t strong. • Double-check if your country allows license exchange it’ll save you a ton of time. • Don’t stress too much. I’ve done it, and if I can, you can too. So yeah getting a Korean driver’s license sounds scary, but it’s really just paperwork, a test (or two), and a bit of patience. Once you’ve got it, you’re free to hit the road for that coastal drive or spontaneous road trip with friends 🚘✨
