Part 3: Do’s and Don’ts While Holding a D-2 Visa in South Korea Once you obtain your D-2 visa and arrive in South Korea, it's important to understand the responsibilities and restrictions that come with it. Properly adhering to the rules not only helps you maintain your legal status but also ensures a smoother academic and personal experience. Violations, even unintentional ones, can lead to penalties, visa cancellations, or difficulty when applying for future visas like D-10 or F-2. ✅ DO: Register for Your ARC Immediately You must apply for your Alien Registration Card (ARC) at the immigration office within 90 days of your arrival. This card is essential for daily life in Korea — you’ll need it for opening bank accounts, subscribing to mobile phone plans, and applying for part-time work permissions. ✅ DO: Attend Your Classes Regularly Your D-2 visa status depends heavily on your attendance and academic performance. Korean immigration monitors student visa holders through university reporting systems. Excessive absences, poor grades, or failure to maintain academic standing may lead to visa cancellation or disqualification from extensions or changes in visa type. ✅ DO: Update Immigration if You Move or Change School If you change your address, it must be reported to the immigration office within 14 days. Failure to do so can result in fines. Similarly, if you transfer to a new university, you must apply for a visa change or update through immigration. Studying at a different institution without official permission is a serious violation. ✅ DO: Get Work Permission Before Starting a Job D-2 visa holders are allowed to work part-time, but only after obtaining permission from the immigration office. To apply, submit: • A part-time work application form • Letter of recommendation from your school • Work contract with the employer • Your ARC and passport The permitted work hours are: • Undergraduate students: up to 20 hours/week (Monday–Friday), unlimited on weekends • Graduate students: up to 30 hours/week, unlimited on weekends Working without permission can lead to heavy fines or deportation. ✅ DO: Report Changes in Academic Status Inform immigration if you take a leave of absence, graduate early, or switch programs. Leaving school without notice is considered an illegal stay and can seriously affect future visa applications. for Don'ts, stay tuned ...
