One of the best ways to experience Korea beyond K-pop and Korean BBQ is by joining in its festivals. Whether you’re into culture, food, nature, or just love a good crowd, Korean festivals are full of energy, creativity, and tradition. Here are a few that I personally think every foreigner should try at least once: 1. Boryeong Mud Festival (보령머드축제) Held every summer in Boryeong, this festival is pure messy fun. Think mud wrestling, slides, obstacle courses, and even mud massages. It started as a way to promote the region’s mineral-rich mud, but now it’s one of the most iconic summer events in Korea. Bonus: it’s right next to the beach. 2. Jinju Lantern Festival (진주남강유등축제) This one is beautiful and calming. Thousands of lanterns float along the Nam River, creating a magical atmosphere at night. It’s based on a historical tradition to honor fallen soldiers. Great for photos and quiet walks. 3. Gwangju Kimchi Festival (광주김치축제) Love kimchi? This is for you. It’s more than just tasting you can actually make kimchi, learn about fermentation, and take some home. It’s also a cool way to understand Korean food culture on a deeper level. 4. Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival (진해군항제) If you're in Korea during spring, this festival is a must. Jinhae turns into a dreamy pink wonderland with cherry blossoms lining every street, bridge, and walkway. It’s the perfect weekend getaway just be prepared for crowds because everyone wants that perfect sakura shot. Whether you're here short-term or long-term, experiencing at least one Korean festival will give you a memory that lasts much longer than any souvenir.
