2025.07.31 13:18Looking for a place to live in Korea? Let me guide you through the four most common housing options for foreigners — one-room, goshiwon, officetel, and villa. Each has its own vibe, price, and pros and cons. Let’s break it down! 📝
🛏️ 1. One-Room (원룸)
A one-room is a small studio apartment with a private bathroom and mini kitchen. Perfect for students and solo expats.
- Monthly rent: 400,000 to 700,000 KRW
- Deposit: Usually 5 to 10 million KRW
-Good for: Privacy, longer stays, more freedom
🧳 2. Goshiwon (고시원)
Super small rooms with shared kitchens and sometimes shared bathrooms. Budget-friendly and no deposit needed!
- Monthly rent: 200,000 to 400,000 KRW
- Deposit: 0 KRW
- Good for: Short-term stays, tight budgets
But be warned, rooms are tiny!
🏢 3. Officetel (오피스텔)
Modern studio units in mixed-use buildings. Bigger than one-rooms and more stylish.
- Monthly rent: 600,000 to 1.2 million KRW
- Deposit: 5 to 20 million KRW
- Good for: Working professionals, couples, more space
🏘️ 4. Villa (빌라)
Low-rise apartments in residential areas. Older buildings, but more space and often cheaper than officetels.
- Monthly rent: 500,000 to 900,000 KRW
- Deposit: Varies, usually lower than officetels
- Good for: Families or roommates
My final tip 💬
If you're on a tight budget, goshiwons are great for a start. For more comfort, go for a one-room or officetel. Always visit in person before signing! 🗝️🇰🇷

20일 전This information is really useful, I have to say a private rental is much better if you can afford it, because its modern and the rooms are much higher quality. Thanks for the insight!!! :)
