Learning Korean as an adult can be full of challenges, but it is also incredibly rewarding and essential if you want to feel at home while living in Korea. I can not help but compare it to learning English as a second language as a child, which came so much more naturally. After a few years of trial and error, I have learned what truly helps me, and I thought I would share some tips. What worked: 1. Daily immersion: Listening to Korean podcasts or watching dramas with subtitles helped my ear adjust to natural speech. It is a fun yet very effective way to learn. 2. Language exchange: Meeting Korean speakers who wanted to learn English created a low-pressure environment to practice speaking. If you are a student, make sure to check if your university has any language exchange clubs. 3. Structured courses: Enrolling at a Korean university’s language institute gave me discipline and a solid grammar foundation. It might feel difficult if you’re not much of an academic learner, but it’s definitely important and effective. Be sure to check out free online courses like the Sejong Institute. 4. Consistency over intensity: Studying 20 minutes daily was more sustainable than occasional three-hour study sessions. 5. Practice speaking: I delayed speaking for months because I was afraid of making mistakes. But in reality, people appreciate your effort and are often patient and happy to help. In the end, the key is finding a balance that fits your lifestyle. There’s no “perfect” method, but staying curious, brave, and consistent makes all the difference.

Really appreciate you sharing this. The point about consistency over intensity is so true—it’s easy to burn out otherwise. I also agree that practicing speaking early makes such a big difference, even if mistakes happen.
