Korea life 101: get 알뜰폰 SIM

I believe in paying it forward, so even though I haven't lived in Korea that long, I'm passing on my knowledge. I've also received a lot of help from KLIK in finding part-time jobs. I also don't want other people to go through the same hardships that I went through when I first came to Korea. 1. Get a phone first I think the first thing that you should do as a foreigner in Korea is to get a cell phone. Usually the cell phone from your home country will not work and you will unknowingly pay very expensive roaming fees. If you really want to use it, you will need to get a wifi egg to activate it, but you will not be able to make phone calls or send messages. 2. Get prepaid SIM cards first Prepaid SIM cards are not very expensive in Korea. So you can survive with them for at least a few months right after you arrive in Korea. 3. Why do you need a phone? It is said that Korea is an IT country. You'll see that when you get here. There's public wifi everywhere, and you can easily use Samsung Pay (and in some cases, Apple Pay! Finally!) in almost every place. However, this also means that pretty much everything you do in Korea officially requires a phone... in your name. So first you need a phone. From Kakaotalk to online banking, a working phone is crucial in so many cases. 4. What is 알뜰폰? After you have settled down a little, get 알뜰폰 plans. 알뜰 basically means to save or be frugal in Korean, and it means you will be able to access the same network coverage as other major carriers like KT, SKT, LG for a much cheaper price. There are many 알뜰폰 providers that also cater to foreigners, so you should check them out. Some famous ones are Chingu, Woori, etc. Some people say that the customer service or after-sales service is not so good, but I haven't experienced anything bad so far. 5. Anything else? I think I'll upload something similar if people seem to like it, so please feel free to ask any questions. I'll try to answer them as much as possible. Good luck!

I have aldeulpon as well. I've been using it since the day I came to korea lol because i can't join to any Family Plans at KT or SK like koreans do, pre-paid sim cards are the best option for me now. Wish there was some Friend Package for foreigners, it would've been much cheaper haha

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I wish there were 가족요금제 for foreigners, too. Otherwise, there are still bundle plans that combine all your TV, internet, and cell phone, but they are usually offered by major carriers and they weren't that cheap compared to 알뜰폰.
