Before joining the DMZ Docent Tour at Imjingak Park and its nearby sites, I quickly realized this wasn’t just another casual trip. Visiting a place so deeply tied to history and emotion needed some extra thought and preparation. Here’s what I made sure to bring and keep in mind. The very first thing I packed was my passport. Even though Imjingak Park itself usually doesn’t require it, some areas near the Civilian Control Line sometimes do. I didn’t want to risk being turned away if ID checks happened, so I kept it safely in a small pouch that was easy to reach. For clothing, I chose something comfortable but respectful. Since I knew there would be a lot of walking between places like the Freedom Bridge, peace gondola , and the barbed-wire fences covered in prayer ribbons, I wore sneakers and light, breathable clothes. At the same time, I avoided anything too flashy because the DMZ isn’t just a tourist spot it’s also a place of remembrance. I also brought a few essentials that I knew would make the tour smoother: a water bottle to stay hydrated, some light snacks in case I got hungry, and a small notebook. The docent’s explanations are what make this kind of tour truly special, so I wanted a way to quickly jot down thoughts or details that stood out. Of course, my phone was fully charged for taking photos, but I reminded myself to always check if photography was allowed before clicking. Mentally, I also tried to prepare myself. I reminded myself that while Imjingak Park has open spaces and even recreational areas, it’s also filled with heavy stories of separation and loss. I wanted to approach each stop whether the Freedom Bridge with respect and empathy, not just curiosity. Since my tour also included a concert at the park, I packed snacks for the evening and a small foldable mat to sit on. Those little comforts really helped me enjoy the music after walking all day. Looking back, being well-prepared made my DMZ Docent Tour so much more meaningful. Instead of worrying about small inconveniences, I was able to focus on the stories, the atmosphere, and the powerful symbolism of Imjingak Park and its surroundings. If you happen to visit, make sure to prepare well before you travel to "The DMZ" Note: This is a place which contains story of Pain, Peace and a hope for re-unification so please dress respectfully. Do adhere the rules (some places are not meant for clicking pictures so respect that).
