Seoul’s New Hangang Bus: A Fresh Chapter in Urban Transport

Seoul has introduced the Hangang Bus, a new eco-friendly ferry system that began full operation on September 18, 2025. Designed to combine daily commuting with scenic travel along the Han River, the service covers a 28.9 km route connecting seven piers: Magok, Mangwon, Yeouido, Oksu, Apgujeong, Ttukseom, and Jamsil. Currently, eight vessels operate with 14 daily round trips, running between 11:00 AM and 9:37 PM. From October 10, hours will expand to start at 7:00 AM on weekdays, with more frequent trips including express routes during rush hours. By the end of October, up to 12 vessels will handle 48 daily trips. The fare is 3,000 KRW per ride, with unlimited rides available through the Climate Companion Card add-on. Riders can check real-time schedules, seat availability, and weather updates via Naver Map and Kakao Map. Accessibility has also been prioritized, with free shuttle buses linking piers to nearby subway stations, bicycle racks onboard, Wi-Fi, wheelchair spaces, and snack cafés. All vessels are eco-friendly, using hybrid or electric power to reduce emissions. During trial runs, passenger satisfaction reached 81%, with praise for affordability and river views. However, the launch also faced technical issues, safety concerns, and breakdowns that disrupted service. City officials have promised urgent fixes and stronger safety checks to regain public trust.
