Customary Korea Wishes as girl enters womanhood Please help this blended international family by answering our question. My husband’s ex-wife and daughter are Korean. My husband and I live in the states, and hoping someone can help answer a question we have about when Korean girls get their first period and what is customary. The ex-wife sent my husband a message today to let him know his daughter just got her first period and suggested he should congratulate her, but she also sent with laugh emoji’s. She said it is customary for the father to do so, but he’s unsure what to do, and obviously wants to do what is best for his daughter. In the states, it wouldn’t be customary and he doesn’t want to embarrass his daughter by bringing this up if it is not customary. Thank you for your input and helping this blended international family https://www.reddit.com/r/korea/comments/1ffjgr4/customary_korea_wishes_as_girl_enters_womanhood/ I saw this on Reddit and thought people here may also have something to share. The most upvoted comment was this: I was born and raised in Korea (36, F) and my friends received bouquets and cakes when they first got their period. Nowadays I heard there are gift boxes with related items specifically for congratulating this occasion. But for me, the morning after the day I got my first period I found a basket of purple flowers my dad left in the living room before leaving for work. I wasn't very close to my dad back then, I hardly saw him as he was working late nights all the time. I remember thinking I like the purple flowers (perhaps it would've felt weird in my sensitive teenage mind if I got red flowers?) it remains as one of the best memories with my dad. Now looking back as a grown up, I appreciate it even more how he made the effort to congratulate me this way when he returned home past 10 pm and left for work before 7 am. I never knew that Korean families celebrated like this!

I have talked to my friends about this before and it seems that menstruation is still quite taboo in Korean culture. So it's great that people are starting to change.

I felt the same way. My friends don't talk openly about menstruation. This is also true in other places - a sad truth.

In my home country, they make girls jump up and down three times to shorten the period pain 🤣

The fact that the Korean girl received a purple flower instead of a red one shows how thoughtful her father was! such a heartwarming story.
